Steps for youth employment amid corona scourge

The government has taken some pragmatic steps with an eye to ensuring employment of the nation's youth amid the outbreak of the coronavirus disease in Bangladesh.
As part of the move, industries ministry has taken multiple measures to equip the youth, including women, with major employment skills.
The skills will help ensure the future employment prospects and economic growth of the country following the outbreak of COVID-19.
Earlier, the ministry selected a total of 14 projects each with a five-year term from 2021 to 2026 with intent to create skilled manpower in the country.
The projects will help meet the demand of the fourth industrial revolution as well as ensure employment for the unemployed after the post-coronavirus pandemic.
"We've selected 14 projects aiming to create skilled manpower and employment," said a high official of the ministry familiar with the development last week.
The World Bank is likely to provide finances for seven out of the 14 proposed projects, he told the FE.
The estimated costs of the projects are $50 million.
"We're discussing with the World Bank for financing the projects," the official further said.
The projects include 'Enhancing capacity of Training Institute for Chemical Industries' to create efficient manpower through industrial training, capacity building of small cottage industries training institute and modernisation of 10 BSCIC skill development centres.
Other projects include capacity building and strengthening of BITAC, high-tech modern technical training centre in Mirersarai industrial park in Chittagong, capacity building of NPO staff through knowledge sharing of best practices in productivity, training programme for IR 4.0 skills development, capacity development of Bangladesh Institute of Plastic Industry and skill enhancement programme for informal sector.
