Steps soon to raise use of renewable energy: President

Stressing the need for ensuring energy security for the future generation, President Md Abdul Hamid said Thursday measures would have to be taken to increase the use of the environment- friendly renewable energy along with reducing the system losses and dependence on fossil fuel, reports BSS.

"We must come out from the mentality of the indiscriminate use of electricity . . . we've to be rational in the use of electricity, side by side steps will have to be taken to increase renewable energy and cut system losses and dependence on fossil fuel for ensuring energy security for the future generation," said the President while addressing the inaugural ceremony of 'Electricity Fair and the National Electricity Week-2014' here.

Highlighting the importance of electricity for socio-economic development, the President said power and development go hand in hand and electricity is essential for all socio-economic development, including industries, agriculture, treatment and communication. Referring to the government's plan to turn Bangladesh into a middle income country by 2021, he said uninterrupted power supply will have to be ensured for setting up of new industries, especially agro-based small and medium enterprises in rural areas and their operations.
