Chief Adviser (CA) Fakhruddin Ahmed Wednesday said the government would start constructing and reconstructing various embankments and improving the water drainage system as soon as the ravaging flood was over to minimise its future intensity and damage caused by it, reports UNB.
The CA disclosed the government plans while talking to reporters after distributing relief materials among the flood victims in the DND flood-affected areas at Kazlarpar in Matuail union under the city's Jatrabari thana at noon.
Ahmed said he was visiting the flood-ravaged areas to see for himself the sufferings of the people and how to solve the water-logging problem in the DND areas as water stagnation has been a regular phenomenon over there.
Expressing gratitude to the people of all sections and professions for their spontaneous response to his call in his address to the nation to help out the flood victims, Ahmed said the government along with people would be able to successfully tackle the natural calamity.
Replying to a question, he reiterated that the present government would cordially accept the spontaneous cooperation from the development partners.
In this regard, Ahmed said a meeting of the representatives of Bangladesh's development partners was to be held with the ERD Secretary Wednesday afternoon where the modality of their support would come out.
"Our objective will be how quickly the assistance can be reached to the flood-affected people," he told the journalists.
Asked whether the flood this time was severer than that of 1988, he said the severity was not the big issue. "The fact is that flood has hit the country and the government along with people is facing it and carrying out relief and rescue operations and other tasks.
"You (reporters) can better judge the flood situation as everyday new areas are being inundated and information are coming out," he added.
