Students protest as JU opts for online classes for freshers

Progressive student bodies on the Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus have opposed online classes for first-year students instead of in-person academic activities.

To this end, they staged a protest rally in front of the new administrative building of the university on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the JU authorities have recently made this decision on online class after a prolonged five-month delay from the latest admission test.

According to the protesters, the delay in opening new residential halls is linked to an underhand dealing regarding staff recruitment.

Again, many former students staying in dormitories for years in the name of politics under the ruling party have created an accommodation crisis.

The student demonstrators demanded immediate evacuation of the illegal occupants from the halls, they claimed.

Mahfuz Islam Megh, general secretary of Jahangirnagar Theatre, said, "The administration claims a shortage of seats in the hall, but many students with expired studentship are still staying there freely."

"The administration is not taking any action against them. The first-year students entered this residential university with a dream, but that dream has been shattered by taking classes online."

Sharmin Akhtar, another student, said, "If classes are held online, who'll say it's a residential university?"

Alif Mahmud, convener of a faction of JU Chhatra Union, said, "A few days ago, the prime minister inaugurated six halls. It's absurd that the administration announced online classes without an academic council meeting or adhering to any rules."
