The Bangladesh Students' Rights Council has called on Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) to refrain from violent politics, while urging Islami Chhatra Shibir to abandon covert political activities and participate in open, democratic student politics.
Leaders of the organisation expressed concern over recent political developments on campuses at a press conference held at Madhur Canteen of University of Dhaka on Friday.
Speaking at the event, the council's president, Nazmul Hasan, said many had expected an end to what he described as 'terrorist-style politics' in educational institutions following the fall of Sheikh Hasina. However, he expressed disappointment, stating that similar situations are re-emerging.
Referring to the July-August demonstrations, he noted that both Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir had previously fought together against fascism, but are now engaged in clashes over campus dominance.
He highlighted a recent confrontation at Chattogram City College, where weapons such as machetes, hockey sticks, and sticks were reportedly used, calling the incident alarming. He also criticised the lack of legal action against those involved, even days after the incident.
Nazmul Hasan further mentioned that tensions between JCD and Chhatra Shibir escalated on Thursday at Dhaka University over a Facebook post, which fact-checking organisations later identified as fake. Despite this, DUCSU's Social Welfare Secretary and Literary Secretary were attacked at Shahbagh Police Station.
He also condemned the assault on at least 10 journalists, including the president and general secretary of the Dhaka University Journalists' Association, describing the incident as deplorable.
"Anyone going to a police station to file a General Diary (GD) cannot be treated as a criminal and assaulted. Ensuring justice is the responsibility of the state," he said, adding that neither Chhatra Dal nor Chhatra Shibir would be allowed to engage in muscle-based politics on campus.
Addressing Chhatra Shibir, he said the previous environment of repression no longer exists; therefore, the organisation should abandon covert political activities and operate openly within a democratic framework. Maintaining committees while continuing underground operations, he added, is unacceptable.
At the press conference, Dhaka University unit president Sadman Abdullah also expressed concern, saying it was painful to see pro-uprising forces engaging in internal conflict. He strongly condemned the attack on members of the journalists' association, calling it disgraceful.
