The High Court directed the authorities concerned Monday to submit before it probe reports on police firing on the students of Rajshahi University made by police as per the Police Regulations of Bengal, 1943, reports UNB.
An HC bench comprising Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarker asked the Inspector General of Police, the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner and the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Matihar Thana to come up with the reports within one week.
Passing the order, the court said it needs the reports to examine the legality of the police firing.
The court also issued a rule upon the authorities concerned asking them to explain as to upon what authority police had opened fire on the agitating RU students.
The rule also wanted to know why they should not be directed to submit the reports to the higher authorities as per the Police Regulations of Bengal, 1943.
The Home Secretary, the IGP, the RMP Commissioner and the Matihar thana OC have been made respondents to the rule.
On February 2, police and Bangladesh Chhatra League activists swung into action while the general students of Rajshahi University were agitating on the campus in protest against fee hike and continuation of evening master's programmes.
Police fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas canisters on the demonstrators as they refused to disperse, leaving over 50 injured.
Besides, the BCL men allegedly joined the cops during the attacks on the students.
A writ petition was filed with the High Court on February 18 challenging the legality of the police firing on the students.
Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua had filed the writ petition on behalf of 14 university teachers and several rights organisations.
