Evercare Hospital Dhaka has successfully completed a complex cardiovascular procedure called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) on a critical patient.
The successful TAVR is seen as a milestone in the country's cardiovascular surgery.
The hospital management and physicians made the announcement at a press briefing held at the hospital auditorium in the city's Bashundhara Residential area on Sunday afternoon.
Evercare clinical & interventional cardiology department Prof Dr A Q M Reza, senior consultant & coordinator Prof Dr Tamzeed Ahmed, senior consultant Dr Kazi Atiqur Rahman, senior consultant Sohail Ahmed, senior consultant Dr Ratnadeep Chaskar, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of the hospital, were present at the conference among others.
While briefing the reporters, senior consultant of the hospital's Clinical & Interventional Cardiology Department Prof Dr Md Shahabuddin Talukder said they have successfully completed TAVR on a septuagenarian patient.
Usually, the problem of aortic valve stenosis is addressed through open heart surgery, which is very risky for patients, especially the aged ones, said Mr Talukder.
The alternative to this treatment is TAVR which is minimally invasive but it requires latest advanced technologies, he added.
"Although this method is used in many developed countries, it is only a recent development in the Bangladesh's healthcare sector," he said.
The patient, Kazi Md Abdur Rouf, expressed his gratitude to the doctors, hospital management and all concerned for successfully completing the procedure.
Mr Rouf's treatment was only third of its kind in Bangladesh and the first one at the Evercare Hospital.
The cost of the surgery is estimated at around Tk 3.4 million. The cost is less than what the hospitals in the neighbouring countries charge for similar surgery.
