The latest dolphin survey has estimated the presence of about 636 groups or 1,352 Ganges river dolphins in the country.

Environment and Forest Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan disclosed it while speaking as the chief guest at a special discussion, held at the Forest Department on the occasion of the International Freshwater Dolphin Day 2024.

She officially launched the survey and the website for digitalization of the CITES Certification Process. The event also marked a dolphin exhibition and documentary.

The adviser further noted that the presence of freshwater dolphins in the country's rivers and water bodies is an indicator of the environment's health.

To protect dolphins, it is essential to prevent water pollution and ensure natural flow of the rivers.

She called for increased public awareness and effective implementation of the government initiatives along with involving local communities in dolphin conservation efforts.

She also mentioned a plan to introduce risk allowance for the forest department officials.
