CHITTAGONG, Mar 3 (UNB): A court here Monday sent suspended Bangladesh Railway (East Zone) general manager Yusuf Ali Mridha to jail after rejecting his bail petitions in five cases filed over his alleged corruption in railway recruitment.
Judge of Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge's court SM Mujibur Rahman passed the order as he surrendered to the court at noon seeking bail.
A total of 13 cases were filed by the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) against Mridha in connection with corruption and irregularities in recruitment to his department at different times.
Later, the court framed charges against Mridha in five out of 13 cases.
Mridha had been on the run since the ACC filed a case with Kotwali Police Station on September 13, 2012 for recruiting ineligible people by manipulating recruitment test results.
On April 9, 2012, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained former Railway Minister Suranjut Sengupta's assistant personal secretary and Mridha along with Tk 7.0 million stashed in a car. It was believed that the money was collected from job aspirants of the Railway as bribe.
