The city police commissioner has requested the citizens to take police escort while carrying any substantial amount of money that has been the main cause of the recent secret murders and mugging, reports UNB.
When asked about three murders within 24 hours in the city, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Naim Ahmed told the news agency that most of the mugging occurred while the victims carried substantial amounts of money.
He urged the citizens to take police escort, readily available on demand, to avoid such tragic incidents as individuals or companies often carry money in bulk.
The Commissioner admitted that the law and order situation in the capital suddenly deteriorated after remaining stable for 4 to 5 months.
Muggers snatched away Tk 4.6 million (46 lakh) after shooting assistant manager of ACI Company in Tejgaon Industrial area Sunday. Three others including a director of a garment factory were killed in separate incidents in the city's Mirpur, Purana Paltan and Agargaon areas late Sunday and Monday.
Admitting the deteriorating situation, Commissioner Naim said the law and order situation suddenly worsened after remaining stable for 4 to 5 months. Some time it is good and some time it worsens, he added.
The Metropolitan police boss said 6,000 law-enforcers--of them 4,000 police and 2,000 RAB--have been deployed in the city since the beginning of the Ramadan on September 2. Besides, plain-cloth security personnel are also patrolling different points to guard against criminal activities.
About 171 Orange Police teams are also patrolling the city by motorbike to nab muggers and extortionists.
The Commissioner further said special measures have also been taken for seven days after the Eid when a large number of city dwellers would stay at their native villages to celebrate the festival with their near and dear ones.
