The parliamentary standing committee on textiles and jute ministry suggested take specific presentations on the existing problems of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) and their solutions from the authorities concerned for making it self-sufficient and financially viable.
The Jatiyo Sangsad (JS) body also recommended taking realistic steps by formulating a far-sighted plan to save the jute industry from substantial loss.
The suggestions came at the committee's 8th meeting at the parliament building on Sunday with its chairman Saber Hossain Chowdhury in the chair.
In the meeting the members were dissatisfied over the ministry's presentation on the progress in taking various steps to revive jute sector. The steps were taken in line with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's directives to officials during her visit to the ministry in October 2014. She is scheduled to sit with BJMC officials on April 12.
The directives included: taking necessary steps for taking back the leased or sold state-owned jute mills from the private entrepreneurs who could not resume their operations, stopping further lease of any state-owned jute mill, and allocating huge unused lands of BJMC as small plots to private entrepreneurs only for producing, processing and developing jute goods etc.
The PM also directed the officials concerned to install modern machineries in the jute mills by replacing the old ones, and to find out ways of resuming production in the abandoned or closed jute mills with cooperation of China.
In the meeting on Sunday BJMC officials told the committee that they would submit the report on allocating jute mill plots to private entrepreneurs by March 31.
Besides, the report on taking back the mills, in which the private entrepreneurs could not start production as per the condition of their lease or sale, will be submitted by the five-member committee to the ministry on the same date.
In another meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on railways ministry, the members suggested examining the possibility of reducing the present proportion of quota in selling train tickets. At present 30 per cent quota exists in selling tickets.
They also asked the ministry to prepare a detailed project proposal (DPP) with priority and importance of modernization of level crossings, and take alternative measures.
The suggestions came at the committee's 10th meeting with its chairman ABM Fazle Karim in the chair.
The JS body also asked the officials concerned to evict illegal structures on the land of Bangladesh Railway in Syedpur as well as quick appointment of manpower in the organisation's vacant posts to speed up its activities.
In a separate meeting of home affairs ministry, it was informed that recruitment process of 10,000 trainee constables (8,500 male and 1,500 female) is going on. Besides, recruitment of 600 police sergeants (male and female) is also under process.
The recruitments are going on following the prime minister's pledge to recruit 50,000 police personnel.
The issue was discussed at the committee's 7th meeting with its chairman Tipu Munshi in the chair.
It was also informed that directives have been made to all police supers, additional police supers and assistant zonal police supers as well as OCs and ICs of highway range, police stations and outposts to take necessary steps to control indiscriminate use of VIP horn, flag-stand and sticker with JS monogram on highways.
