Speakers called upon the Myanmar Government and the global communities to take immediate measures for safe return and rehabilitation of Rohingya refugees with dignity and full civil rights.
They made the argument at a day-long conference on 'Genocide and Justice: Bangladesh's Response to the Rohingya Crisis', held on Saturday at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban Auditorium of Dhaka University (DU).
DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the conference while Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, MP, addressed it as the chief guest. Centre for Genocide Studies of DU organized
the event.
Dr Hasan Mahmud said, "In 2017, when Rohingya people crossed our border, many of us questioned that why we didn't close our border? Then our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave them shelter and fed them also."
"Now we are talking about humanity, human rights and everything. But what are they doing for the refugees. Now, it is time to solve the issue," he said.
He also said that they called upon the Myanmar government to take immediate measures for safe return and rehabilitation of Rohingya refugees with dignity and full civil rights. He urged the international community to come forward for safe return of Rohingya refugees to their own country.
DU VC Prof Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman also urged the global community to put pressure on Myanmar for safe return of Rohingya people to their homeland. He also called upon them to find out ways to resolve the problem immediately.
Director of Centre for Genocide Studies Prof Sheikh Hafizur Rahman (Karzon) presided over the function while Chairman of National Human Rights Commission, Bangladesh Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed addressed it as special guest. Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of DU Prof Dr Zia Rahman, UNHCR Representative to Banglaedesh Johannes Van Der Klaauw, Security Analyst Air Commodore (Retd) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Migration and Displacement Specialist Asif Munier and Director (Research) of CPJ, BRAC University Dr M Sanjeeb Hossain addressed the conference as panel discussants.
Founder Trustee of Liberation War Museum Mofidul Hoque delivered key-note speech while Prof Dr Jamila A Chowdhury gave welcome address.
