The city's taxicab operators at a press conference held at the National Press Club Sunday urged the government to waive the bank interests that have accrued against imports in order to make the business sustainable.
Leaders of the Bangladesh Association of Taxi Cab Operators (BATCO) claimed at the press conference that the past caretaker government had noted the plight of the operators and said the bank interest should be waived to bring an economic discipline in the cab business.
BATCO president Abdul Mannan said: "We have around Tk 500 million worth of interest outstanding with the banks since 2003. We want to sustain in the business and waiver is important for us."
Currently, around 1000 taxi cabs are plying in the city streets out of 10857 registered in 2003.
