Tazreen chairperson granted bail

FE Report | April 11, 2014 00:00:00

A Dhaka court granted bail on Thursday to Tazreen Fashions Ltd's Chairperson Mahmuda Akter Mita in a homicide case filed over the devastating fire that broke out at the garment factory and killed at least 112 workers in 2012.

After hearing a bail petition filed by Mahmuda Akter, Judge Md Abdul Majid of the Dhaka District and Sessions Judge's Court granted her bail.

"She was granted 'permanent' bail in the case," her lawyer Md ATM Golam Gous told the FE Thursday evening.

During the hearing, Mr Gous placed various arguments that include: Mahmuda Akter was earlier on bail, and at that time she didn't violate the court's condition; she is a woman and has a child and most importantly she is not involved in the business of the company.

Earlier on April 8, 2014, she filed the bail petition after her surrender before the court following a lower court order.

Cancelling her bail, granted on February 10, 2014, by another court, the District and Sessions Judge's Court on March 20, 2014, ordered her to surrender before the court within 15 days.

Tazreen Fashions managing director Delwar Hossain, husband of Mahmuda Akter, is now in jail.
