Prof Serajul Islam Chowdhury on Sunday said the attack on quota reformists is 'shameful' and 'unbelievable', reports UNB.
The emeritus professor made the remark while addressing a protest march at Central Shaheed Minar in the city.
The teachers of different public and private universities under the banner of 'Teachers against Repression' brought out the march demanding punishment to those involved in the attack on the quota reform seekers.
They also called for release of the activists of quota reform movement who have been implicated in 'false' cases.
The protesting teachers paraded different roads from the central library of Dhaka University (DU) to Central Shaheed Minar around 11:50 am.
More than 30 teachers from DU, Jahangirnagar University (JU), Jagannath University, University of Liberal Arts (ULAB), Stamford University, and Independent University took part in the march.
Addressing the march Prof Serajul Islam Chowdhury said, "The attack on quota reformers should not be accepted in anyway."
"They have a logical demand and it's a popular one also. Government also accepted students' demand. But recently, the quota reformers were assaulted by some people across the country while staging their scheduled programme," he added.
"These types of attacks never happened in our country, even in Pakistani and British period. It's incredible and unbelievable," he commented.
Conducted by DU International Relations Associate Prof Tanzimuddin Khan, DU former Prof Akmal Hussain, Prof Asif Nazrul of Law Department, Development Studies Department Prof Kazi Maruful Islam, and English Department Associate Prof Tasneem Siraj Mahboob also addressed the rally.
Meanwhile, Dhaka University (DU) vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman likened on Sunday the activities of the quota reform activists to that of militants, reports UNB.
"The way the quota reformers are announcing programmes in video messages on Facebook is similar to that of militants," he said while talking to reporters at his office.
Mentioning that several of his colleagues showed him such a live video, the VC said, "It seemed to me that they're making an evil attempt to spread provocation and violence through video messages from secret places like the Taliban and Boko Haram."
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court placed on Sunday Rashed Khan, joint convener of Bangladesh General Students' Rights Protection Council, on a 10-day fresh remand in two separate cases filed with Shahbagh thana.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Asaduzzaman Nur passed the order after rejecting the bail plea of the accused.
Earlier on July 02, Rashed was put on a five-day remand in a case filed under the ICT Act.
