Two teams, including a joint team of UIU and MIST and another from icddr,b, were declared winners at the seventh HSIL Hackathon 2026 from the competition's Bangladesh edition at UIU on Saturday.

Held under the theme "Building High-Value Health Systems: Leveraging AI," the hackathon emphasised the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in improving healthcare quality, accessibility, and efficiency, according to a press release.

The Harvard Health Systems Innovation Lab (HSIL) Hackathon is one of the largest global health hackathons.

'Team Maverick', representing the Military Institute of Science & Technology (MIST) and United International University (UIU), developed an AI-enabled platform for early detection of dyslexia in children and their support through personalised and interactive learning. The solution integrates performance analytics and guided interventions to support early diagnosis and continuous skill development.

Meanwhile, 'ShigellaAI Diagnostics Bangladesh', a team from icddr,b, introduced an AI-based clinical decision support tool to improve diagnosis and management of Shigella (bacteria)-related diarrhoeal diseases in resource-constrained settings. The tool leverages routinely available clinical data to generate real-time risk scores, enabling more accurate and evidence-based treatment decisions.

The winning teams from Dhaka hub will advance to the HSIL Global Bootcamp, where they will further refine their solutions and compete with winners from other international teams for global recognition and progression to the HSIL Venture Incubation Program. UIU marked its second consecutive year as the only hub in Bangladesh for this global competition.
