A British transport agency will provide support to the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to help improve traffic management in Dhaka.
Transport for London (TfL) will provide technical assistance in the areas of traffic network management, bus operations, and transport system security.
This was discussed in a meeting when British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke paid a courtesy call on DNCC Administrator Mahmudul Hasan at the DNCC headquarters in the capital's Gulshan area on Monday.
DNCC Chief Executive Officer (Additional Secretary) Mir Khairul Alam, Chief Engineer Brig Gen Md Moin Uddin, Additional Chief Engineer Mohammad Arifur Rahman, and other officials were also present in the meeting, among others, according to a statement.
The collaboration aims to enhance the transport infrastructure in the DNCC areas, beginning with a pilot project between Gulshan-1 and Gulshan-2. TfL will introduce an experimental operational model.
The British entity conducted a field inspection of Gulshan's transport infrastructure in July.
Earlier in 2023, the DNCC and the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to modernise Dhaka's public transport system and traffic signals, and to ensure proper congestion management.
The DNCC Administrator said TfL had successfully implemented a modern transport network in London, which served as a global benchmark.
"By exchanging knowledge and experience with them, we can aspire to establish a similar system in Dhaka." The experience of TfL's bus franchise model and the traffic signal system would be particularly beneficial to Dhaka.
Based on the outcomes of the pilot project in Gulshan, the DNCC planned to develop a comprehensive master plan for the entire city's transport system, Mr. Hasan also said.
The DNCC-TfL partnership symbolised a significant step towards transforming Dhaka's urban infrastructure, with an emphasis on sustainable solutions for one of the world's most congested cities, he added.
