Industries Minister Dilip Barua Thursday emphasised the need for efficient use of energy, conserving resources and environment-friendly corporate policy for sustainable development of the country.
"Sustainable development is a key issue for socio-economic development without creating any negative impact on environment," he said as the chief guest in a workshop.
Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DCCI) in cooperation with German Technical Corporation (GTZ) jointly organised the workshop titled 'Green Initiative: Way to Go Green' at the DCCI auditorium in the city.
DCCI President Zafar Osman chaired the workshop.
He said the government is committed to developing a win-win strategy for economic development and environmental protection and the environmental protection can be managed while pursuing a higher productivity level and better quality of life.
"The elimination of wastes in all forms means productivity improvement which leads to a better quality of life, and all the respective stakeholders will have to work towards the eco-efficiency," he added.
Mr Barua also sought effective recommendations that would emerge out of the workshop to incorporate in the draft of Industrial Policy-2009, which would be announced Saturday next.
The minister also urged the country's business community to find out appropriate ways and means for ensuring green productivity in the industrial sector for the country's sustainable development.
Mr Zafar Osman said the main objective of the workshop is to create awareness of green initiatives among business community, exchange ideas, raise awareness of various eco-efficient measures/green measures, introduce different tools and certification programmes for building an eco-friendly business atmosphere.
"And this can be done by reducing wastes, recycling of wastes and bringing eco-efficiency," he said.
He also emphasised the need for using different green business tools which would be very helpful for the business community. These should be customised in such a manner as can be affordable and reasonably priced for small and medium enterprises, he said further.
