TIB hails govt's nod to draft defence policy

The Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) lauded the government on Tuesday for endorsing the draft of National Defence Policy-2018.

Besides, the TIB urged the government to create an opportunity for people to express their opinion on it before enacting the law.

In a statement the TIB welcomed the government move underlying its importance for national security and defence, and expressed hope that the policy would be enacted in a participatory process.

The cabinet on Sunday approved the draft Defence Policy on principle at a secretariat meeting.

Executive director of TIB Dr Iftekharuzzaman said approving the draft national defence policy is undoubtedly a significant milestone which is consistent with good governance policies adopted by the government.

People have the right to know details about the policy. Besides, to make it fully people-friendly; people's participation in it and opportunity to provide opinion are considered an integral part of developing democratic practices, he added.

He expressed hope the key focus of the policy would be transparency, accountability and people's participation in the true sense.
