The government has taken an initiative to create a fund of Tk 10 billion for providing loan at a single digit rate to the financially insolvent people in rural areas for nurturing milk producing cows, officials said.
To push the move to mitigate nutrition deficiency forward the ministry of fisheries and livestock (MoFL) has sent a letter to the ministry of finance (MoF) recently to help create the fund.
"We sent a proposal to the MoF for allocation of Tk 10 billion (1,000 crore) so that we could provide loans to the households (poor people) in rural areas for purchasing milk producing cows that will help ensure nutrition," Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque told the FE.
He said if they can get the fund, then it will greatly help reduce the gap between production and demand of cow milk. Besides, it could also be a source of income for rural people especially for women.
Asked about the interest rate of the loan he said, "We are in favour of giving loans to the rural poor people only at five per cent interest for purchasing milch cows".
