Muggers snatched around Tk 1.2 million after shooting at the victims in two separate incidents in the capital's Pallabi and Jatrabari areas Sunday, police authorities said.
Unidentified muggers shot in the legs of one Ali Akbar, 28, a Milk Vita salesman, when he along with a cousin was going to deposit the sales proceeds to the branch of Sonali Bank near Mirpur Bangla School in Pallabi at around 3:30pm.
As soon as they reached the bank gate, the muggers opened fire on them. Before fleeing the scene, they snatched away Tk 500,000 from Akbar, Pallabi police quoted the victim as saying.
Bullet-hit Akbar has been taken to a nearby clinic.
In Jatrabari, muggers shot at Sri Jhatan Saha, 30, an employee of Sifat Trading, and snatched Tk 650,000.
Six muggers swooped down on Jhatan at about 12 noon, when he was going to deposit the money with the Jatrabari Branch of National Credit and Commerce Bank.
The muggers riding three motorbikes stopped Jhatan's van and asked him to give them the money. As he refused, they opened fire on him and snatched away the money.
Jhatan has been taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Shafiqul Islam Badal, the owner of Sifat Trading, adding he had sent Jhatan to the bank with the money.
