Tk 14m allocated for rehabilitation of flood-hit farmers

JHENIDAH, Sept 24 (UNB) : An amount of Tk 14 million (Tk 1.40 crore) has been allocated for rehabilitating 13,505 flood-affected farmers of six upazilas of the district.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), the amount has been sanctioned in first installment for the farmers of
Sadar, Kaliganj, Kotchandpur, Moheshpur, Shailakupa and Harinakundu upazilas against the demand of Tk 33.8 million.
The amount will be spent for buying seeds and fertilisers for the enlisted flood-hit farmers to be distributed free of cost.
Every poor and marginal farmer, who is owner of 1 to 2.5 acres of land, will get the benefit for cultivating boro, maize, wheat, lentil, mustard and vegetable on his land.
Each cultivator will get necessary seeds and fertiliser free for only one variety of crops under the rehabilitation programme, the sources said.
Deputy Director of DAE Abdul Kader Sarkar said distribution of seeds and fertilisers has already been started and will continue till October.
