The government is going to implement a Tk 27.88 billion project to upgrade Jaidevpur-Chandra-Tangail-Elenga highway to use it as SAARC Highway Corridor-4 to facilitate road connectivity with neighbouring countries, reports UNB.
According to official sources, the Communications Ministry took up the project in line with the plan of the South Asia Sub-regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC). This highway will also be utilised as part of Asian Highway-2 and Asian Highway-41.
As a step forward, sources said, the Cabinet Purchase Committee is set to consider a proposal Monday to appoint a consultant for this mega project at a contract value of Tk 1.04 billion.
The consultant will supervise the design and construction work of the project earmarked for implementation between 2013 and 2018.
Officials said that under the project, 70 kms of highway will be upgraded to 4-lane from the existing 2-lane while the accident prone points of the road will be identified, and 5 flyover, 27 bridges, 60 culverts, separate lanes for slow-moving vehicles, and the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) headquarters with 16,000-square feet floor space will be constructed.
The project already received nod of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) in April last year.
Of the total estimated cost of the project, the government will finance Tk 9.44 billion while the remaining Tk 18.43 billion will come from the donors' funding.
Asian Development Bank (ADB), OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) and Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) will be financing the project.
The RHD has selected Korean firm Kunhwa Engineering and Consultant in joint venture with Korea Consultants International and Technocrats Pvt Ltd (India) in association with Development Design Consultant Ltd (Bangladesh) as the consultant of the project.
