The Dhaka University authorities on Wednesday announced a Tk 9.45 billion budget for FY 2024-25 with 67 per cent allocated for salaries, allowances and pensions and 2.12 per cent for research.

Dhaka University (DU) Treasurer Professor Mumtaz Uddin Ahmed presented the budget at the Senate Building of DU. Senate Chairman and University Vice-Chancellor Professor ASM Maksud Kamal presided over this annual Senate session.

In the FY 2024-25, salaries, allowances and pensions account for Tk 6.33 billion or 67 per cent of the total expenditure. Tk 200.5 million has been allocated for research, which is 2.12 per cent of the total budget.

"In order to survive in this era, new innovations are necessary. Without spending a lot of money in research, success is just a dream. Tk 200 million is not enough for research. More than 2000 teachers work in the university. Average research allocation for each is Tk 1.0 lakh. Is it possible for a good basic research with this fund?" DU Treasurer Mumtaz Uddin Ahmed questioned.

DU VC ASM Maksud Kamal declared that a decision was taken to launch the 'Bangabandhu Doctoral Fellowship Program' for research at this university, expected to be launched from the next academic year.

1st year students will also receive a respectable stipend each month and other facilities, which are almost similar to those in the developed world, he said.

"Dhaka University does not have its own medical faculty. Almost all major universities in the world including Beijing, Tokyo and National University of Singapore have medical faculties. These universities are making significant contributions to medical research and healthcare in their respective countries. A world-class medical faculty will be build at the Purbachal campus." he added.

The VC announced, "Campus Tourism' booklet is being prepared to highlight the rich history and heritage of the campus."
