Tornado damages huge quantity of fruits, vegetables

SHERPUR, Sept 10 (UNB): The tornado that swept over Sapmari and Kuthurakanda villages in Bhatshala Union in Sadar Upazila Thursday extensively damaged fruits and vegetables worth Tk 2.5 million (25 lakh).
Parul, a banana farmer of Dakkhin Sapmari village, along with two others cultivated banana on 24 kathas of land but the tornado damaged the garden totally. They estimated the loss at Tk 0.25 million.
Badal Chandra said the tornado damaged papaya and banana trees on eight kathas of their land. He said "I cultivated papaya on my four kathas for the upcoming Ramadan but the tornado damaged the trees completely."
Besides, the tornado ruined a garden of medicinal plants of Ganashyastha Kendra Complex worth over Tk 0.1 million.
Local agricultural official SM Emdadul Haq said a list is being prepared to rehabilitate the affected farmers.
