A four-day training programme on Post-Disaster Damage and Loss Assessment, jointly organised by the World Bank (WB), Global Facility on Disaster Risk Reduction (GFDRR) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), concluded at the WB office in Dhaka Thursday.
The training was designed to build national and local capacity by introducing participants to tools that can be used to measure the post-disaster impacts on the affected communities, said a WB press release.
Over 50 government officials from various ministries and agencies involved in post-disaster management work, staff from different donor agencies and NGO representatives participated in the training.
"Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to natural disasters and potentially could be among the worse-affected countries due to the climate change. In the past, natural disasters caused heavy devastation including loss of lives and livelihoods," said WB's acting country director Vinaya.Swaroop at the concluding ceremony.
"It is, therefore, important for the country and those working on post-disaster rehabilitation to have an appropriate set of tools that can accurately assess the damages and losses incurred," said Vinaya.
"Such capacity building activities relating to disaster management will help Bangladesh develop a cadre of disaster management professionals," Vinaya added.
