February 12, 2015 00:00:00

BAGERHAT, Feb 11 (UNB): In an effort to protect wildlife and forest resources of the Sundarbans, the forest department has imposed a ban on plying of trawlers (engine-run ones) in the rivers and canals of the mangrove forest as these are widely used for poaching and smuggling of the wildlife.

The authorities of the Sundarbans-both east and west zones- clamped the ban restricting the use of trawlers in any work in the forest, including fishing and transportation, until further order.

Sources at the forest department said the poachers enter the Sundarbans taking permission (Pass) from the forest department in the name of fishing and transportation of fish.
