Trial of Sagar-Runi murder won't be lost: Law minister

FE REPORT | February 05, 2024 00:00:00

Law Minister Anisul Huq has assured of taking appropriate steps needed for the trial of the case filed in connection with murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.

"The real culprits of Sagar-Runi killing must be brought under trial. The trial of this murder will not be lost," he told journalists after inaugurating a training programme organised for the Assistant Judges and equivalent judicial officers at the Judicial Administration Training Institute (JATI) on Sunday.

Earlier on Thursday last, the ministers said that if the investigation needs 50 years to find the killers of journalists Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, it will have to be given 50 years.

"If police cannot complete the investigation in this case, will it be right to forcibly complete it and submit a final report or charge sheet? They [police] should be given as much time as their investigation may require to find the murderers. If the probe takes 50 years, it will have to be given 50 years," he said.

Sagar Sarowar, news editor of private TV station Maasranga, and his wife Meherun Runi, senior reporter of another TV channel ATN Bangla, had been killed at their rented flat in the capital's West Rajabazar on February 11 in 2012.

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) is investigating the case, and has taken time from the court 105 times to submit the investigation report.

Asked whether the charge of investigation would be transferred to CID or PBI as the Rab could not complete it in the last 12 years, the minister said the government will take appropriate steps needed for the trial of the case.
