Two dacoits killed, 3 cops hurt in Barisal gun battle

BARISAL, July 28 (BSS): Two dacoits were killed and three police personnel injured in a gun battle at Krishnapur under Banaripara Upazila in the early hours of Monday, police sources said.

They said the incident took place when a team of police was on a patrol duty in the area found a group of dacoits near the Krishnapur Primary School under Banaripara Upazila where they were taking preparation to commit a dacoity at around 1:30 am.

The patrol team immediately informed it to Banaripara, Ujirpur and Babugonj police stations.

Police personnel rushed to the spot and cordoned Krishnapur area.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers the dacoits opened fire which was retaliated by the police.

During the gunfight two dacoits were hit by bullet and died on the spot while three police constables sustained injuries.

Other members of the dacoit gang however, managed to escape.

The dead dacoits were identified as Rafiqul Islam Dulal (32) of Nalchhity Upazila of Jhalokathi district and Shamsu (40) of Bakerganj Upazila of Barisal district.

Of the injured police constables, two were admitted to the Barisal Police Hospital.

In the encounter which lasted for around 30 minutes, the dacoits traded 30 rounds of bullet while the police fired 16 rounds of bullet. The police seized one revolver, one gun and two sharp weapons and ammunition from the place of the incident.

Barisal's Superintendent of Police (SP) Taufique Mahabub Chowdhury visited the spot Monday morning. The bodies were sent to the Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

A case was lodged with the Banaripara police station in this connection.
