Two dredgers fined Tk 0.6m, six held

CHATTOGRAM Dec 24: The Department of Fisheries (DoF) fined two illegal dredgers Tk 0.6 million to protect biodiversity in the Halda River, a nationally recognised fisheries heritage site in Chattogram. Six people were detained during the drive on Wednesday, officials said.

The engine-powered dredgers were illegally transporting sand from Madunaghat area towards Gorduara Kamdar Ali Hat stretch of the river. The six detainees were sentenced to one month of simple imprisonment and fined a total of Tk 0.6 million. Such drives would continue to safeguard the biodiversity of the Halda River, they added.
