Two killed, 40 shanties gutted in Ctg

CHITTAGONG, Sept 14 (UNB): A devastating fire at a slum in the port city burned two members of a family alive, injured two others critically and gutted 40 shanties Saturday night.
The fire that broke out around 11:00 pm at Yunus Colony in densely populated Mansurabd area under Double Mooring police station in the city.
The dead were identified as Yunus' mother Abida Khatun (72) and his son Iqbal Hossain Akash (8).
Fire brigade sources said the fire originated at the slum of Yunus from a lamp and soon engulfed the adjacent shanties.
Yunus, his mother Abida Khatun, wife Hosne Ara and son Iqbal Hossain Akash got trapped in their house when the fire broke out.
Abida and Aksah were roasted alive inside the shanti while neighbours rescued Yunus and his wife in critical condition. They were rushed to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
On information, fire-fighters rushed to the spot and brought the flame under control after over one hour of frantic efforts with the help of local people.
Fire brigade sources estimated the extent of loss from the fire at Tk 1.5 million (15 lakh).
