Two-month ban on fishing in rivers from Mar 1

Fisheries Directorate will impose a two-month ban on fishing in major rivers in the southern region from March 1 to ensure safe laying of eggs and increasing fish resources through protection of fries. reports UNB.

About 340 kilometres areas of Ilisha, Meghna, Tentulia, Bishkhali and Padma Rivers of Barisal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barguna, Munshiganj, Chandpur and Laxmipur regions have been declared fish sanctuaries.

Fisheries Directorate sources said the ban would be imposed in 100 kilometres from Shatnol to Char Alexander of rivers Meghna, Padma and branch rivers, 90 kilometres from Madanpur to Char-Shababazpur of rivers Meghna, Ilisha and branches, 100 kilometres from Veduria to Char Rustom of rivers Bishkhali and Tentulia and branches and 50 kilometres from Kalapara to Charmanik of estuary areas.

Abdul Aziz, deputy director of divisional office of Fisheries Directorate said all preparations have been completed with the help of law enforcing agencies and local administrations to execute two-month ban on catching all kinds of fishes from March 1 to April 30.

Special grants, VGF cards and alternative employment opportunities would be provided for the affected and unemployed fishermen during the period.
