Parliamentary standing committee on public accounts (PA) has asked Dhaka Power Distribution Company and West Zone Power Distribution Company to settle their audit objections involving more than Tk 270 million of fiscal year (FY) 2007-08 and FY 2010-11.
The committee also asked them to investigate the allegation of fraudulence and money collection from common people by the rural electrification staffs and take action against those involved in such evil practice.
It is gathered that the staffs collect extra money while giving connection to electricity meters and transformers and installing electricity bulbs.
The committee made the suggestions at its 28th meeting held on Sunday at the parliament building. Committee chairman Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir chaired the meeting.
The two companies were asked to realise outstanding bills and take legal action against the perpetrators of fraudulent activities within the next 60 days. Electricity bills amounting to Tk 124.89 million remain outstanding with different sections of consumers while bills worth Tk 26.77 million are due with the consumers whose power connections have been disconnected. Losses worth Tk 4.34 million were incurred by the government in the form of surcharge for late payment.
The committee also asked the two companies to settle audit objections involving Tk 38.66 million and 57.91 million loss incurred by the government as the authority failed to keep systems loss at a fixed target.
