UGC to work on world rankings of varsities

FE REPORT | June 29, 2021 00:00:00

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken an initiative to preserve actual information of university researchers.

The lack of a storage system of such information has been an obstacle for the country's universities in achieving desired positions in the world rankings.

This initiative will be helpful to meet the UN announced Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UGC and the government officials said these during a virtual event on Monday on higher education and research.

The meeting was attended by officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Department of Secondary and Higher Education, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics (BANBEIS) and SDG Tracker of UGC.

Director of Strategic Planning and Quality Assurance at UGC Dr Fakhrul Islam moderated while UGC Member Professor Biswajit Chanda presided over the virtual event.

UGC will create a database to know the real picture of research under the initiative, and information on research, researchers, research assistants, and working hours spent on research will be incorporated in the system.

The decision was taken in line with SDG 9 to increase research activities in the country's universities and to incorporate advanced technologies.

This will improve the quality of education and research in the country's universities to the desired level by 2030. The move will also contribute to increase the number of researchers at a significant rate, the meeting hoped.

UGC Member Dr Biswajit Chanda said there is a huge shortage of quality research in the country. Therefore, it is necessary to overcome this situation.

He added there is no alternative to quality education and research to build a prosperous Bangladesh by 2041.
