UNDP official lauds resilience, adaptability of coastal people

The visiting UNDP Regional Director Haoliang Xu highly appreciated Monday the adaptability and resilience of the communities living in the country's coastal areas to mitigate the challenges of the climate changes.
Mr Xu also lauded the leadership in building resilience at the community level in the face of vulnerabilities and the challenges posed by the changing climate, UNDP release said Monday.
"UNDP views resilience as a transformative process of strengthening the capacity of the individuals, communities, institutions and countries to anticipate, prevent, and recover from the aftermath shocks", the regional director said.
Through two long-term multi-partner flagship programmes, the early recovery facility and the comprehensive disaster management programme, UNDP has helped Bangladesh address the disaster risk management with a comprehensive approach from proactive risk reduction and preparedness.
Mr Xu also visited South East Island of Hatiya to witness the UNDP's innovative intervention that combines green development and climate change adaptation with mitigation efforts to provide local communities with diversified livelihood options and expressed satisfaction over the progress.
Later on the day, the visiting UNDP regional director also inspected the Chittagong Hill Tract areas to witness the development works of the Chittagong Hill Tract Development Facility (CHTDF) that is working with the government of Bangladesh, CHT institutions and local communities to pursue development and poverty reduction.
