Rights activists held a unique sit-in programme in the city on Wednesday holding pitchers in their hands in front of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), demanding adequate, clean and free of charge public toilets in the capital, reports UNB.
The sit-in programme was jointly organised by Nirapad Development Foundation, Mastul Foundation, Anchol Trust, Paribartan Chai, Arunodoyer Tarun Dol, and Campaign for Development Foundation and Prottasha-Madok Birodhi Songothon.
Speaking on the occasion, the organisers said there are only 69 public toilets in the capital meaning that there is only one public toilet for every 0.2 million citizens.
Chairman of Nirapad Development Foundation Ibnul Sayeed Rana said the DSCC and the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) jointly have a budget of Tk 35 billion for fiscal 2014-15, but there is no allocation for building serviceable toilets in this overcrowded city.
Terming the existing public toilets unclean, general secretary of Prottasha-Madok Birodhi Sangathan Helal Ahmed said germs of various diseases like typhoid, dysentery as well as worms are spreading among people through the city's public toilets.
The activists urged the government to build an adequate number of toilets across the capital and make their use free.
