Four fallen Bangladeshi peacekeepers have been honoured at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York, reports UNB.

The four fallen peacekeepers from Bangladesh are Sergeant Md Altaf Hossain, Lance Corporal Md Jakirul Alam Sarkar, and Private Md Monowar Hossain, who lost their lives while serving with the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), and Private Md Abdur Rahim who served with the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

Bangladesh is the second largest contributor of uniformed personnel - over 6,990 enlisted military and police personnel - to UN peacekeeping operations worldwide.

Commemorating the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers at its headquarters in New York on Friday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres paid tributes to the service and sacrifice made by UN 'blue helmets' for the cause of peace around the world, according to UN News Centre.

Since the first peacekeeping mission deployed 70 years ago, more than 3,700 military, police and civilians who chose to serve, have lost their lives.

"These peacekeepers gave their lives to protect the lives of others. We're forever in their debt, and they're always in our hearts," said Guterres at a wreath-laying ceremony at the UN Headquarters.

1Last year saw the highest number of fatalities in many years - 132 individuals from 37 countries - for UN peacekeepers as a result of malicious acts.
