FE REPORT

US Secretary of State Antony J Blinken said the US is deeply grateful to the government and the people of Bangladesh for giving shelter to nearly one million Rohingyas.

In a statement on Friday, he said, "We are deeply grateful to the government and the people of Bangladesh for giving refuge to nearly one million Rohingyas."

On August 25, the sixth anniversary of genocide against Rohingyas, the US stands with the victims and survivors and reaffirms its commitment to pursue justice and accountability for the atrocities committed by the Myanmar military, the statement added.

In another statement on the day, the US Embassy in Dhaka said the US commends the people of Bangladesh for their generosity and hospitality in continuing to host nearly one million refugees.

Rohingyas, who continue to find refuge in Bangladesh, have suffered too long. They deserve an opportunity to return to their homes with safety and dignity, raise their families in peace, and live meaningful and purposeful lives, according to the statement.

To that end, the US remains committed to finding solutions to the crisis, justice for its victims, and accountability for the perpetrators of these atrocities, through targeted sanctions, international pressure, and support to the national and international courts taking actions against those responsible.

Until conditions in Myanmar improve, the US calls upon the international communities to continue providing humanitarian aid to one of the world's most vulnerable and marginalised populations.

"We must continue to support the government of Bangladesh and the Bangladeshi communities hosting Rohingyas."

The people of Bangladesh welcomed them with open arms, compassion, and a sense of shared humanity. In response, the international community rallied to support Bangladesh in its efforts, it pointed out.

"The American people have contributed more than US$2.1 billion since 2017 in response to the humanitarian crisis that unfolded across the region, including more than $1.7 billion in Bangladesh, to support Rohingya refugees and local communities that so generously host them, and we remain steadfast in our support."
