Bangladesh is going to observe the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) 2014 like other countries across the globe today (May 17) with the theme 'Broadband for Sustainable Development'.
The Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and other organisations, including BTRC, BTCL, Teletalk and cellular phone operators, have chalked out various programmes to observe the day.
This year, the telecom ministry, in association with the local administration, is organising day-long programmes in Khulna city. Telecom Minister Abdul Latif Siddique is expected to inaugurate the programmes as the chief guest.
A discussion on 'Broadband for Sustainable Development' will be held with the participation of telecom and IT professionals. Dr Pallab Kumar Chowdhury, assistant professor of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), will present the keynote paper in the programme.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) chairman Sunil Kanti Bose and ICT Division secretary Nazrul Islam Khan will take part in the discussion.
Later, a colourful rally and road-show will be brought out.
In addition, a number of programmes marking the day will be organised by different organisations. Besides, television and radio channels will broadcast special programmes, while supplements will be published in the national dailies.
The purpose of WTISD is to raise awareness regarding the possibilities of information and communication technology (ICT) to help bridge the digital divide.
It also aims at extension of broadband access to rural areas, least developed countries and small island states.
World Telecommunication Day is being celebrated on May 17 since 1969, marking the foundation of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the signing of first International Telegraph Convention in 1865.
BSS report adds: President M Abdul Hamid said Friday the government announced the 'Vision-2021' for reaching benefits of IT and telecommunication system to peoples of all regions in the country.
Proper implementation of the Vision-2021 will play an important role in strengthening the national economy of Bangladesh, the President hoped.
