FE Report
Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has taken a project to develop an environmentally sustainable water supply system.
Under the 'Dhaka Environmentally Sustainable Water Supply Project', Dhaka WASA will produce 500 million litres water per day from the river Meghna from its 'Bishnandi' point of Araihajar Upazila of Narayanganj, said a press release.
Dhaka WASA will bring water from the Meghna to develop surface water capacity to 70 per cent of its total demand by 2021.
Dhaka WASA has planned to reduce dependency of ground water level to maintain an environment-friendly water management system for Dhaka city.
A discussion meeting and road show in this regard were held at a city hotel recently. Dhaka WASA Managing Director Taqsem A Khan chaired the discussion while Asian Development Bank (ADB) Senior Urban Development Specialist Norio Saito, Planning Commission Member Hedayetullah Al Mamun and the international and local potential bidders were present at the meeting.
The participants were informed about the bid package under the project that entails the design, build and operation of the water intake, raw water transmission pipe line and the water treatment plant.
Dhaka WASA officials and the representatives of ADB met the bidders in one to one meeting. The bidding process is expected to start this month.
A treatment plant under the project will also be established at Gandharbpur capable of treating 500 million litres of water per day. Dhaka WASA is currently producing 2.25 billion litres water per day against the demand of 2.20 billion litres of the city dwellers.
'Dhaka Environmentally Sustainable Water Supply Project' is targeted to be implemented by December, 2019 with a total cost of US$ 674.9 million financed by ADB, French Agency for Development (AFD), European Investment Bank (EIB) and Bangladesh Government.
