The government will install a water pump in Mirpur in the capital with the capacity for extracting, treating and supplying 25.0 million (2.5 crore) litres of fresh water daily for city dwellers to ease the existing water crisis, reports BSS.
The pump will be installed at Goran Candbari of Mirpur under the supervision of Rural Development Academy (RDA) of Bogra involving Tk 250 million by the next year.
In the rainy season, the pump will purify rain and flood water for the dwellers for checking the lavish use of the ground water.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed Thursday between RDA and Dhaka WASA in this regard. Director General of the RDA M Nazrul Islam and Managing Director of Dhaka WASA Mahbubur Rahman inked the MoU on behalf of their respective sides.
State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanak was present as the chief guest on the occasion.
Nanak said the government has taken short, medium and long- term plans to resolve the water crisis of the capital.
"The city dwellers won't be much sufferers in the next summer as an initiative for setting up generators was taken at all water pumps in the city," he said.
He said that the government was trying to take different kinds of programmes instead of setting up deep tubewells to meet the water demand as the excess use of ground water is causing environmental hazards.
Secretary of Local Government Division Monzur Hossain said that the ground water level was falling alarmingly due to the excess use of deep tubewells.
Chairman of Dhaka WASA Ghulam Hossain said the daily water demand in the capital is 2100 million litres, but supply is 1800 million litres.
Project director MA Matin said the project is included in the Annual Development Programme (ADP) and the pump will be set up within one year after the fund allocation.
He said water from this pump would be supplied especially to the dwellers of Mirpur at 20 per cent less price than that of the WASA.
