The Dhaka Wasa has taken an initiative to recover five canals from grabbers in the city to ease water logging during the upcoming rainy season.

The WASA has already sent the proposal to the planning department for approval. The five canals are: Hazaribagh canal, Baishteki canal at Mirpur, Kurmitola canal, Manda canal and Begunbari canal.

"Under the project, the DWASA would recover the canals, rebuild the banks of the canals and rehabilitate the people who will be affected in the project areas," Superintending Engineer of Rehabilitation and Development (R&D) Circle of WASA Kay Sa Ching told The Financial Express.

The government initiatives to free the city areas from water-logging have proven unsuccessful, with the perennial problem causing sufferings to city dwellers in the last monsoon also.

In the wake of the recent heavy rain due to a low over the Bay of Bengal, many areas across the capital were inundated taking its toll on the city life.
