CHITTAGONG, July 12: The master plan of 1994 for the overall development of the port city of Chittagong including removing acute water-logging has been lying in the cold-storage for all these years. Not putting the plan into action has so far severely affected the normal life of the city residents.
Buildings and establishments are being constructed in unplanned and undisciplined manner resulting in the narrowing of streets and lanes in the city. This also creates intolerable traffic congestion. Also the prolonged water logging problem still remains unresolved.
According to the concerned sources, with a view to developing the port city including removing the persisting water-logging problem, the Master Plan Programme, Port City of Chittagong was divided into 10 drainage areas. The programme was to be financed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and included modern drainage system and repair of the existing canals and excavation of new ones.
According to the concerned sources, water logging is being created due to unplanned and uncontrolled hill-cutting, filling up of canals, unplanned urbanisation, and construction of different establishments over the drains and culverts.
Under the circumstances, a united effort is needed for undertaking a fresh plan by the concerned agencies of the government and a prompt execution of the plan to rescue the city dwellers.
