RANGPUR, May 23 (BSS): The Water Development Board (WDB) has been constructing two crossbars on a chute channel of the mighty river Brahmaputra in Chilmari Upazila of Kurigram on an urgent basis, officials said Saturday.
Beginning from May 8 last, the work on the project has been progressing very fast and is expected to complete by June 20 next to divert back the water flow again from the channel to the mainstream of the Brahmaputra.
After completion of the project, the 650-metre threatened portion of the main flood and erosion control WAPDA embankment and thousands of acres of arable land, public and private establishments, institutions and houses on the right bank of the river will be saved.
The officials said that a large chute channel (new tributary) was formed by the side of the important WAPDA embankment at Kalirkura area under Raniganj Union of Chilmari Upazila some two years ago following devastating erosion by the Brahmaputra.
The chute channel eroded more areas threatening the 650-metre main embankment and a huge area during the last year's rainy season.
Apprehending further devastating erosion during the upcoming rainy season, the WDB took up the emergency project of constructing the two crossbars at Tk 1.70 million (1,70,16,460) on the chute stream.
