The World Food Programme (WFP) is launching a US$ 52 million programme to feed 2.2 million people in Bangladesh for over six months, reports UNB.
"An appeal for the amount has been made by the WFP and the response is satisfactory," WFP Representative Douglas Broderick said when he met Foreign Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury at his office in the city Sunday morning.
He also apprised him of the WFP initiatives in response to the requirement for foodgrains to tackle the post-cyclone situation.
The foreign adviser underscored the need for proper coordination between international specialised agencies and the Ministries of Food and Agriculture.
"The foreign ministry will always be there to smoothen this coordination," Dr Iftekhar said speaking to the media afterwards.
Broderick also handed over a cheque for Tk 0.356 million (Tk 3.56 lakh) as "personal contribution" of the WFP staff in Bangladesh offices to the Chief Adviser's Relief Fund.
The Foreign Adviser received the cheque and thanked him for the generosity.
