FE Report
The World Consumer Rights’ Day (WCRD) will be observed in the country) as elsewhere in the world today (Saturday) with a call for creating awareness among the consumers over their rights and intensifying campaign against unscrupulous traders.
For the first time the day will be observed at the upazila level. But 81-upazilas will not observe the day on March 15, 2014 due to elections there on the day.
Though the day is observed every year, the consumers in the country are not fully aware of their rights, according to the consumers' rights body.
They called upon the government to strictly enforce the existing laws for protecting the consumers' rights.
The authorities of the Directorate of National Consumers Rights Protection (DNCRP) which is under the ministry of commerce (MoC) have asked those upazila administrations to observe the day by March 20, 2014.
He said that the main objective of the observance of the day is to create awareness among the consumers about their rights. It will also help the government to intensify the ongoing action against unscrupulous traders in the country.
To mark the day, the DNCRP and the Consumers' Association of Bangladesh (CAB) have chalked out elaborate programmes to be observed in the capital and other parts of the country.
The day will be observed by 240 public and private organisations in 220 countries of the globe.
A seminar will be held today (Saturday) at CIRDAP (the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific) auditorium. The theme of this year is "Fixed Our Phone Rights".
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed will be present as the chief guest while the officials of MoC and DNCRP and other stakeholders are expected to attend the programme.
