The World Diabetes Day-2007 will be observed in Bangladesh and elsewhere across the globe today (Wednesday) with campaigns for creating awareness and expanding medical combat against the debilitating disease, reports UNB.
The theme of this year's World Diabetes Day highlights a united fight to prevent diabetes, which destroys vitals of life and gradually pushes the patient to death.
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.
The Diabetic Association of Bangladesh has chalked out different programmes, including discussion, to mark the day.
President Dr Iajuddin Ahmed and Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed gave separate messages on this occasion, calling for creating awareness among the people about reasons of diabetes and ways of its prevention.
"The number of diabetic patients would be reduced with the rise in awareness among people about reasons of diabetes and ways of its prevention," said the President.
They hoped mass awareness would be created among the people about diabetes through observing the day.
