WZ Railway earns Tk 1.78b

RAJSHAHI, Nov 21 (BSS): The west zone of the Bangladesh Railway (BR) has earned Tk 1.78 billion (178 crore) by carrying passengers and goods during the last one year, which is Tk 400 million more than that of the previous year.
General Manager of the BR west zone AKM Mushfiqur Rahman told while inaugurating the "Bangladesh Railway Service Week- 2008" at Rajshahi Railway Station here. He said main thrust of the week is to enhance confidence of the passengers and businessmen through improving the standard of railway services.
Other objectives of the week are to enhance skill and security awareness of the operating staffs and others concerned, safe train operation, accident prevention and upholding the image of the railway.
The Railway authorities have formed 10 task forces to make the objectives fulfilled successfully in its 1,578-kilometre route under Paksey and Lalmonirhat railway divisions.
Mushfiqur Rahman said number of railway passengers has increased significantly with the rising of bus fare during the last couple of years. But, he said expected development of the sector is yet to be attained.
To overcome the crisis, he said the zone has undertaken various development projects at an estimated cost of Tk 26.70 billion for implementation in phases.
The present caretaker government has already approved three of the projects with an estimated cost of Tk 4.11 billion and the projects will be implemented during 2008-09 financial year.
