The first death anniversary of eminent jurist and constitution expert, Dr Muhammad Zahir, Bar-at-Law, will be observed today (Friday)
After his Masters in English Literature from Dhaka University (DU) in 1960, he was enrolled as an Advocate of Dhaka High Court in 1962. Later, he obtained his LLM (1964) and PhD in Company Law (1966) from London. In between, he was called to the Bar in London as Barrister in 1965 by the Lincoln's Inn. He subsequently assisted the Australian Attorney General's Department (1974-75) to help draft the Securities Laws of Australia.
A teacher of Company Law in DU for twenty years, he became Senior Advocate of the Bangladesh Supreme Court (SC) in 1978. In view of his acknowledged expertise in the corporate and business world, he also served as convener and member of several Company Law Reform Committees in Bangladesh and was also elected member of the Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris, France. He was also unanimously elected Alternate President of the Bangladesh Institute for Law and International Affairs, Dhaka.
He is particularly remembered for his analytical legal publication-"Company and Securities Law" of more than one thousand pages, which is now widely used as a book of reference by students, jurists and judges all over South Asia. He was also associated not only with several charitable institutions including the Ahsania Mission but also with music and tennis.
Dua and Quran Khwani will be held on this occasion to be organised by his family. His colleagues and friends have been requested to seek Allah's mercy and blessings for his departed soul.
