Prime Minister's Inter-national Affairs Adviser Prof Dr Gowher Rizvi said on Sunday Bangladesh shared the pride of gifting the world the ancient science of yoga as part of the then India as the country joins celebrating the UN declared 1st International Yoga Day, reports BSS.
"This is one of the greatest gifts of India to the world . . . with Bangladesh having its shared part (in Indian civilisation)," he told a function at the National Museum auditorium in the city.
Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre of Indian High Commission in collaboration with the United Nations System in Dhaka and the Bangladesh Yoga Association organised the function to mark the day.
Rizvi said: "As a student of yoga, I can testify and claim yoga is 4,000 to 5,000 old practice . . . it predates all major religions".
Having an background of teaching public policy and political science in Harvard Kennedy School and Oxford University, he said those who want to link yoga to a particular region could only be "partially correct" as yoga came even before oldest Hindu scripture of Veda, which referrers to Yoga "as it existed long before (the Veda)".
"My family and I are devoted to yoga and meditation and I can testify from my personal experience the extraordinary benefits (I get from yoga)," he said.
